Frequently asked questions

Does the Political Do Not Call Register have any legal status?

None at all! We can’t guarantee that the political parties will respect the list, but we’ll try our hardest to persuade them – and the more people who sign up, the more difficult it will be for them to refuse. We believe that they will respect your right to privacy - they don’t want to call people who are not going to be interested in hearing their message.

How much does it cost to register?

Registration is completely free.

Won’t the Telephone Preference Service protect me?

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is designed to protect you from marketing calls. The Information Commissioner has ruled that political campaigning counts as marketing, however, it’s possible for political parties to call numbers listed on the TPS if their purpose is market research, and some companies use robocall technology to deliver ‘public information messages’ which they argue do not count as marketing.

What information of mine will you pass on?

  • The list that we pass on to the political parties only contains your phone number – no other identifying information.
  • Political parties who take the list are contractually obliged to only use it to suppress phone calls.
  • Be assured that we won’t sell or pass your information on to any other company or commercial organisation for marketing purposes. Your personal information will only be used to ask political parties not to call you – the Political Call Register is run by trueCall who are registered under the Data Protection Act (registration number Z1311843).

Can I register mobile phone numbers?

Please feel free to register both landline and mobile phone numbers, though you must be the bill payer, or acting with the consent of the bill payer.
